2000 Years in the Making
Celebrating an oyster culture dating back to 200 B.C., the communities of the Damariscotta River Valley invite oyster lovers from around the world to Maine for the first annual Damariscotta Oyster Celebration June 14 -16, 2018.
Maine’s Damariscotta River and estuaries produce a unique oyster crop that is recognized around world for diversity of flavor and quality. The Damariscotta Oyster Celebration was spearheaded by an alliance of Damariscotta oyster farmers to educate and inspire oyster culinary innovations in food, drink and culture.
The three-day celebration kicks off on Thursday, June 14th with chefs from North America competing in the International Oyster Chef of the Year Award at the Boothbay Harbor Oceanside Golf Resort.
On Friday, June 15th, experience Tour De Source, a behind the scenes look at the Damariscotta oyster community. The tour will visit oyster farms and the historic Damariscotta Oyster Shell Heaps. Attendees will see breakthrough innovations in aquaculture at the Darling Marine Center research lab and sample craft beers and distilled spirits.
Friday night brings together top chefs from the Damariscotta region to showcase the local food and flavors at Taste Maine’s Future Dinner by the River.
On Saturday, June 16th, the Damariscotta Oyster Celebration culminates with oyster shuckers from top restaurants in the United Sates and Canada going head-to-head in a timed competition for the CanAm Shuck Star. The competition will be hosted in downtown Damariscotta with the celebration including more oyster tasting, beverage pairings, and music.
